2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Launched; Gets Radar Based Safety Tech

In S 350 d guise it is now available with a new inline-6 diesel engine.

Mercedes-Benz India has launched the 2018 S-Class facelift in the country. It is available in two variants – S 350 d priced at ₹ 1.33 crore and S 450 priced at ₹ 1.37 crore (ex-showroom, pan-India). A new BS VI compliant inline-6 diesel engine and a bunch of radar-based safety technologies are highlights on the updated model.

The S 350 d variant is powered by a new 3.0-litre inline-6 diesel engine which produces 282bhp and 600Nm of torque, making it the most powerful diesel engine ever produced by Mercedes-Benz India. It is also Mercedes-Benz India’s first BS VI (emission norms which come into effect in 2020) compliant diesel engine that is capable of running on current BS IV fuel. Even with the BS IV fuel Mercedes says the new engine produces very low Particulate Matter (PM) and NOx mass emissions than the current standards. The S 350 d can sprint from 0-100 km/h in just 6 seconds. The S-Class is also available with a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine which powers the S 450 variant. It pumps out 362bhp and 500Nm of torque and can accelerate the car to 100km/h from a standstill in just 5.1 seconds. Both the petrol and diesel engine is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission and both cars have an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.

The 2018 S-Class is the first Mercedes car in India to come equipped with radar-based safety technologies. It gets Active Distance Assist which can maintain a specified distance to the vehicle in front at speeds of up to 210 km/h. It can also apply the brakes with up to 50 percent of braking power if needed. It also gets Active Steering Assist which helps keep the car in the center of its lane (follows white lines) on straight stretches of road and even on stretches with slight bends. There is Active Braking Assist which can apply emergency brakes to avoid vehicles as well as pedestrians in front and then there is Blind Spot Assist which warns the driver of vehicles in the blind spot during a lane change maneuver.

Exterior changes on the 2018 S-Class include a new grille and bumper with wider air-intakes at the front along with multi-beam LED headlamps with three boomerang shaped LED DRLs. At the rear the car gets a pair of new LED tail-lamps while the side profile sports new 5-twin spoke 18-inch alloy wheels. Changes on the inside include a new panoramic sliding sunroof, a new 3-spoke multi-function steering wheel, an Air Balance package with choice of six air fragrances, 64 colour ambient lighting, 4-zone automatic climate control, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay support, wireless mobile charging in the front and rear centre arm-rests, 13-speaker 590W Burmester surround sound system, etc.

Mercedes says the Star Ease maintenance packages for the S-Class start at ₹ 80,000 for the S 450, which makes the cost of ownership of the new S-Class lower than the outgoing model.
