Driverless Audi RS 7 to lap Hockenheim race track at DTM finale

A driverless Audi RS 7 will do a lap of the Hockenheim race track autonomously at the 2014 DTM finale.

The autonomous Audi RS 7 Sportback with the latest developments on board will be driven as a sideshow for the German Touring Car Championship (DTM) finale on 19 October. The car will do an autonomous lap of the Hockenheim race circuit at race speed which will take the car to its “physical limits with millimetre precision”.

According to Audi, the autonomous RS 7 will be guided around the circuit with the help of ‘sophisticated sensors’ and it will be as fast as if driven by a professional racing driver. The car will complete the lap of the circuit in a little over two minutes and the car may reach speeds of up to 250km/h on some stretches.

The Audi RS 7 Sportback is powered by a 4.0-litre, turbocharged V8 engine producing 552bhp and 700Nm. Power is transferred to the quattro all-wheel drive system through an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

The lap will be broadcast live on the internet of 19 October at 12:45pm (Central European Time).
