Hyundai Reveals Fingerprint Tech For Unlocking And Starting Cars

The 2019 Santa Fe will be the first to get Hyundai’s Smart Fingerprint tech.

Hyundai has announced the first smart fingerprint technology which allows drivers to unlock doors and also start the vehicle. The first model to get this tech will be the Santa Fe SUV which will be released in select markets in the first quarter of 2019.

To unlock the vehicle, the driver needs to place a finger on the sensor located on the door handle. Encrypted fingerprint information will be identified and delivered to the fingerprint controller inside the vehicle. To start the vehicle the driver only need to touch the ignition switch that is equipped with a fingerprint scanning sensor.

The fingerprint recognition technology can also be used to provide a customised driving environment with seat positions, connected car features and side-view mirror positions automatically adjusting to a particular driver’s stored preference.

Hyundai says it has also addressed security issues on the smart fingerprint technology by using capacitance recognition, which detects differentials in the electricity levels in various parts of the fingertip preventing forgeries and faked fingerprints. The technology can only misrecognise another person’s fingerprint as the driver’s in 1 out of 50,000 operations making it five times safer than conventional vehicle keys, including smart keys. Hyundai also says that through real-time learning of fingerprints supported by ‘dynamic update’, the system can continually improve its success rate.

Albert Biermann, President and Head of Research & Development Division of the Hyundai Motor Company said, “In the future, Hyundai Motor plans to further expand the application of the technology to allow the adjustment of temperature, steering wheel position, and many other features which will be tailored to driver’s preferences. This will ultimately offer quality driving experience to each and every Hyundai customer.”

Hyundai will offer the fingerprint technology in select markets initially and expand to other markets in the future.
