Volvo Cars Starts Local Assembly Operations In Bengaluru

XC90 is the first model to be assembled in the country.

Earlier this year Volvo Cars India announced its plans to start local assembly operations in the country at a facility in Bengaluru. Now the company has finally rolled out the first ‘assembled in India’ XC90 SUV from the plant and has plans to start assembling other SPA platform based models (S90 sedan and upcoming XC60 SUV) at the site soon. The local assembly will allow the company to meet the demands of a rapidly expanding premium car segment in the country.

Volvo Cars India’s local assembly facility is located near Bengaluru. It currently will focus on models based on the SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) platform. Volvo Cars is working together with Volvo Group India which makes truck, bus and construction equipment, and uses its existing infrastructure and production licenses.

Charles Frump, the newly appointed Managing Director for Volvo Auto India said, “It’s a moment of great pride for all of us at Volvo Cars. The roll-out of first locally assembled Volvo Car speaks volumes for the company’s commitment to grow further in India. The last three years have been good for us in India and we noticed a positive and encouraging growth in terms of increased segment share, world-class product and new dealer appointments. With global standards in quality, we are a formidable luxury car company in India and on-track to gain a bigger share of the segment.”

Volvo Cars India currently commands close to 5% of the premium segment market share and has aims to double it by the year 2020. The company’s sales have grown 32% in the past two years and it plans to sell 2,000 cars in 2017.

Local assembly operations will allow Volvo to price its cars competitively in the India market as CKD (completely knocked down) kits attract a significantly lower customs duty as opposed to CBU (completely built units).

The V90 Cross Country is also based on the SPA platform but since it is a niche product it is unlikely to be assembled here.
